Mary Richards Obituary

Former Durango resident Mary Frances (Hussong) Richards died Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, in Montrose. She was 75.

Mrs. Richards was born to Ralph and Frances Hussong on March 23, 1939, in Danville, Illinois.

She attended Iowa State University in Ames, where she met her future husband, Charles Thomas "Tom" Richards. The couple married July 24, 1960, in Deerfield, Illinois.

"A talented quilter, caring friend and tireless volunteer, Mary contributed greatly to her family, friends and community," according to her family. "Her life is distinguished by many personal, professional and civic achievements."

In 1973, Mrs. Richards joined the secretarial pool at Miller Publishing Co., and worked her way up to the director of marketing. She retired from Miller in 1997 after 22 years with the company.

The Richardses lived in Minneapolis for more than 30 years, where they raised their four children and served as Boy Scout and Girl Scout leaders and were active in the Lions Club of St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Mrs. Richards served as president of the Lionesses in St. Louis Park.

As retirees, the couple moved to the Durango area in 1996, where they lived for nearly 16 years. While in Durango, Mrs. Richards helped institute the Kids Sight Program through the Lions Club of Durango. The couple enjoyed doing crafts together, including handcrafting wooden toys and embroidered goods.

The Richardses moved to Montrose in 2012 and continued to enjoy crafting together and serving the community. Mrs. Richards often sewed and knitted for charities, including knitted caps and scarves for babies, bandanas for firefighters and quilts for charities.

Mrs. Richards is survived by her husband of 54 years, Tom Richards, of Montrose; sister Ellen (Hussong) Voyles of Moraga, California; children Janet Kerby of Phoenix, Jeff Richards of Mesa, Arizona, Darrell Richards of Henderson, Nevada, and Kristina Jahn of Big Lake, Minnesota; and four grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2015, at the Richardses' home in Montrose.
