Mary Mead Obituary

Mary Beatrice Mead passed away January 8, 2025 at Durango Rehab. She was 90 years old.

Mary was born November 27, 1934 in Ojito, New Mexico to Anton and Ruhey (Welch) Schmitz. She was raised on the family's cattle ranch and attended schools in Lindreth and Albuquerque, New Mexico. She attended school at the old Fort Lewis campus in Hesperus where she met James Mead from Durango. They were married on September 21, 1955.

She was a house- wife on the Mead family farm in the East Animas Valley until the farm was sold in the 1970's, and Jim went to work for the James Family Ranch. Mary Bea then went back to school to finish her degree in art and studied for a career as a victim advocate. She enjoyed her painting, gardening, needlework and studying family history.

She is survived by her daughter Carolyn (James) Klinnert, son Elliott Mead and grandson Dr. Benjamin (Katy) Mead and great -grandson Oliver Mead.

Cremation has occurred and a memorial service will be held later this spring.

I send my prayers to Mary´s family, the Meads and the Billings. Mary´s husband was a distant cousin of mine whom I remember as a child and young adult. I played with all of the cousins on their farms in the beautiful Animas Valley and treasure the many memories. I send my love to all of you who mourn Mary´s passing.

Mary was a dear friend and neighbor for so many years. I have so many fun memories of working with her, laughing (she had a great sense of humor), and visiting her and Jim during the holidays with our family. She was a very talented artist and never stopped wanting to create pretty things. We had many fun conversations during the last few years filled with memories of her colorful childhood and of our families. Blessings to her and to her family.
