Mary Caldwell was my 4th grade teacher at Needham Elementary about 1957. I remember she had the us knitting squares for blankets for Mercy Hospital. Some of the tougher boys refused to knit. Even though I later earned a PhD and retired as a professor, my math skills were always weak. As an adult, I visited Mary on Crestview IN Durango and asked her why we were knitting so much. She explained that because of the post- World War II baby boom the classes were so large that she had to find ways to keep us busy. She was a beloved teacher and our class was a happy one.
