Martha Dyer Obituary

Cortez resident Martha Ann Dyer died Friday, May 31, 2013, at her home. She was 88.

Known as "Marty," she was born to Ernest Scott and Lollabelle (DeMoss) Powell on Oct. 6, 1924, in Odessa, Mo.

Graduating at age 16 from Cortez High School in 1941, Mrs. Dyer received a scholarship to Ross Business College in Grand Junction. She went on to attend the University of Colorado in Boulder for two years.

In August 1945, she married Carl Larimore in Aztec. The marriage later ended in divorce.

She worked as a legal secretary for a time.

On Oct. 7, 1959, she married Guy B. Dyer Jr. in Las Vegas.

She was an active member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization Sisterhood Chapter DD and the First United Methodist Church of Cortez. Mrs. Dyer served as a local Republican Party caucus chairwoman and a volunteer for the Montezuma County Hospital District Foundation.

She was an avid bridge player and bridge teacher. She also enjoyed reading and crocheting.

"Marty kept up-to-date on current events," her family said, "and she and Guy made many wonderful memories traveling the world."

Mrs. Dyer was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Guy B. Dyer Jr., in 2002; and children Carla A. Mulkey, Elizabeth A. Morris and Lloyd Dyer.

She is survived by her children Bruce L. Dyer and Mary Sue Akin, both of Cortez, and Lana J. Cross of Hawaii; sisters Pat Englehart of Durango and Marian West of Cortez; nine grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church, 515 N. Park St. in Cortez. The Rev. Suzanne Listemann will officiate. Burial will take place afterward at Cortez Cemetery.
