Marie Romero Obituary

Marie Matilda Romero died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Aztec, N.M. She was 86.

Mrs. Romero was born to Raphael and Mary Lopez on Oct. 9, 1927, in Ignacio. In 1943, she married James Santiago Romero in Aztec. They remained married for 31 years.

She raised six children and worked numerous jobs in her community and church during her life. She was very strong in her faith and loved helping others, her family said. She enjoyed fishing, baseball, dancing, music, bingo and life. According to family, she was "forever 25 and always on the go," watching her grandchildren play sports or spending her time with her family and friends.

Mrs. Romero was preceded in death by her husband.

She is survived by her daughter, Clara Washington­-Lucero, of Ignacio; sons Dennis Washington of Montrose, John Washington of Ignacio, Gilbert Washington of Rio Rancho, N.M., Justin Jung of Aztec and Denton John Washington of Aztec; 16 grandchildren; and numerous great­-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family.

A viewing will be held from 12 to 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at Hood Mortuary Chapel in Durango, and a rosary will be said. A second rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Monday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 15449 Colorado Highway 172 in Ignacio. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, and interment will take place at Crestview Cemetery, at the intersection of U.S. highways 160 and 172. A celebration of life dinner will immediately follow at Father Andary Hall at St. Ignatius Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to RelayforLife.org are requested.
