Maclovia Gurule Obituary

Durango resident Maclovia Gurule died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010, in Durango. She was 96.

Mrs. Gurule was born to Manuel and Simonocella Esquibel on Oct. 14, 1913, in Canjilon, N.M. She grew up in Canjilon.

In 1933, she married Dismel Gurule in Parkview, N.M. The Gurule family moved to McPhee and then to Durango in 1948.

In addition to raising her children, she had worked at the Savoy, Strater and Landmark hotels and the Holiday Inn.

Mrs. Gurule was involved in the La Plata County Democratic Party and the Spanish Trails Fiesta.

Her family said Mrs. Gurule loved her church home at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and very much enjoyed participating with the Democratic Party. Mrs. Gurule also enjoyed bingo and gaming at the casino.

Mrs. Gurule was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Dismel Gurule; and sons Manuel Gurule, Lemuel Gurule, Bernardo Gurule and Georgie Gurule.

She is survived by her daughters Rosie Gohn and Tina Beal, both of Durango; sons Jack Gurule of Durango and Dismel "J.R." Gurule Jr. of Aztec; brother Joe Esquibel of Española, N.M.; 21 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2010, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m.. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, also at Sacred Heart. The Rev. Antonio Flores will officiate. Burial will take place at Greenmount Cemetery.
