Lucy Martinez Obituary

Former Durango resident Lucy Martinez died Monday, Dec. 26, 2011, in Tulsa, Okla. She was 84.

Mrs. Martinez was born to Adolph and Anita Sanchez Valerio on April 7, 1927, in Alamosa. She was one of 10 children.

On Jan. 10, 1949, she married Jake Martinez in Taos, N.M.

The Martinezes moved to Durango in 1982, where they co-owned Durango Bowl with their daughter and son-in-law, Louella and Randy Stephens, and his parents until it closed in 2003. Mrs. Martinez continued to live here until 2009.

"She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister who enjoyed working in her garden, crocheting, crossword puzzles, traveling and being around her family," her family said.

Mrs. Martinez was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Jake Martinez, in April 2003.

She is survived by her daughters Louella Stephens of Durango and Mary Ann Casaus of Broken Arrow, Okla.; son, Randy Martinez, of Blackwell, Okla.; brother Alvin Valerio of Pueblo; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa. Burial took place afterward at Alamosa Cemetery.
