Trudy Meiers Obituary

Durango resident Trudy Meiers died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014, at her at home. She was 76.

Mrs. Meiers was born to Sylvester and Helen Schanen on March 16, 1938, in Chicago. She grew up in Chicago and graduated from Holy Family Academy High School in 1955. Mrs. Meiers earned her bachelor's degree in medical technology from DePaul University in Chicago.

On Oct. 3, 1959, she married William "Bill" Meiers in Chicago.

She worked at St. Anne's Hospital of Chicago and later at Northwestern University, where she was involved in AIDS research.

"Throughout Trudy's career, she was also a wonderful mother raising three outstanding children," according to her family.

Mr. and Mrs. Meiers retired in the late 1990s and moved to Durango in 1999.

Mrs. Meiers was an active member and volunteered at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She also volunteered at Mercy Regional Medical Center, the Methodist Thrift Shop, Manna Soup Kitchen and other servant ministries as called upon, her family said.

She loved to read and continued to seek knowledge and research at home from her computer.

Mrs. Meiers is survived by her husband of 54 years, Bill Meiers, of Durango; children David C. Meiers, of Indianapolis, Susan T. Meiers, of Macomb, Illinois, and Linda A. Mills, of Wheeling, Illinois; and one granddaughter.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 254 East Fifth Ave. A potluck will be held afterward in the church hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 1800 East Third Ave., Suite 101, Durango, CO 81301; Hospice of Mercy, 1 Mercado St., Suite 270, Durango, CO 81301; Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 254 East Fifth Ave., Durango, CO 81301; or a charity of one's choice.
