Lowell Bell Obituary

Lowell O. 'Mike' Bell

Lowell O. "Mike" Bell, who served with the Durango Police Department, died Aug. 17, 2014, in Durango. He was 83.

He was born Aug. 16, 1931 in Viburnum, Missouri, to Henry and Letha Bell. His family moved to Pagosa Springs in 1947, where they worked for Day Lumber Co.

He married Twilah L. (Montroy) Bell on Aug. 16, 1949, in Santa Fe, and they moved to Durango in 1955, where they raised three sons.

Mike was a policeman for the city of Durango, attaining the position of sergeant. In his two terms with the city, Mr. Bell served during both the Miller Motor Co. fire in 1954 and the Main Avenue fire in 1974. He then worked for Weidman Sawmill, hauling logs with his own trucks. After that, he drove freight trucks for ONC Freight Co.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Twilah Bell, of Durango; sons Ronald Bell, of Dayton, Oregon; Micky Bell, of Ignacio; Dale Bell; four grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
