Lily Yeager Obituary

Former La Plata County resident Lily Joan Yeager died Wednesday, April 14, 2010, in Fort Lupton. She was 92.

Mrs. Yeager was born to George and Lily Bush on Nov. 11, 1917, in New Windsor, Berkshire, England. While working in a

bicycle shop, she rented a bicycle to John Welsh, a sergeant in the Army Air Corps, during World War II. They rode the

English countryside, first becoming friends and then marrying on May 26, 1945.

The war bride came to the United States on a converted troop ship, arriving at Ellis Island in 1946 with the couple's

oldest son David. They took a train to Chicago and traveled on to Durango, Mr. Welsh's hometown. Mrs. Yeager became a

United States citizen on March 31, 1951.

She remained in Durango after Mr. Welsh died in 1955 and raised three boys by herself until she married Gerald Yeager

on Nov. 14, 1967. They built a home in Chimney Rock, which Mrs. Yeager sold after Mr. Yeager died. She moved to

Bayfield, where she lived until moving to Fort Lupton in 2002.

Mrs. Yeager was active in the Methodist Church and senior citizens group until she moved into an assisted-living

center.

Mrs. Yeager is survived by her sons Leslie Welsh of Ignacio, Philip Welsh of Fort Lupton and David Welsh of Blue

Springs, Mo.; sisters Eileen Hamer and Rita Glazebrook, both of England, and Sheelah Harris of Australia; six

grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2010, at Greenmount Ceme
