Leslie Vlasman Obituary

Leslie Vlasman transitioned from this life in Austin, TX on January 22, 2024, surrounded by family and friends.

Leslie was born in Durango, Colorado in 1959 to Marjorie and Andrew Vlasman. She graduated from The University of Northern Colorado in where she majored in education. After student teaching in Denver, Leslie worked as a Special Education Teacher in Arizona and Connecticut before moving to Austin.

She spent the bulk of her 35 years as a Special Educator for Austin ISD, where she was instrumental in establishing a supported employment program for students with disabilities and in launching the Go Project, a program for 18 to 22-year-old students with disabilities. Leslie was a passionate educator, advocate, and friend to her students throughout her career and into her retirement, where she kept up with many of her former students on the phone, via email, and at the bowling alley. Leslie enjoyed swimming, spending time with her children and friends, and taking care of her grand-pets.

She is survived by her two sons, Aaron and Ethan, their wives Hannah and Ioulia, her sister and brother in law, Laura Vlasman and Gonzalo Jimenez, and her nieces Olivia and Sophia.

Leslie and her whole family were friends of mine when we were growing up in Durango. Her big laugh and lively spirit were noticeable to everyone who met her, and her presence raised the energy level wherever she went. Her dedication to special needs students was both surprising (to those of us who knew her in her fun-loving younger days) and admirable. Her big smile will be missed.
