Leroy Woodruff Obituary

Leroy Jolls Woodruff Jr. (LJ), 57, of La Plata County, CO, died 2/12/2025, in Durango, CO, by suicide. Born 12/30/1967, in Evanston, Illinois, he is survived by his partner of 27 years, Kim McRae; his father, Leroy Woodruff, Sr.; mother Pam Hettler; his step-mother Betty Woodruff; and siblings Soc Woodruff and his wife Carey, sister Janet Woodruff and her wife Joanna, nephews William and James.

In 1986, LJ graduated from Lake Forest High School, Illinois. He attended Southern Illinois University and later worked for his family's gutter-installation company. Adept at fixing anything, LJ developed a wide range of skills: electrical, plumbing, appliance repair, landscaping, and fire mitigation, which made him a successful working partner with McRae in their home maintenance and property management business.

LJ will be remembered for his interest in photography and particularly his night-sky images. His photos were displayed at the Durango Public Library. LJ was also a devoted dog owner. At his best, LJ will be remembered for his humor, his grasp of current events, his ability to spot pretentiousness, and his no-nonsense approach to daily life.

At this time no services are planned. Memorial contributions may be made to La Plata County Humane Society and Axis Health System.

LJ..thank you for your friendship. I will miss our stereo room time together, our playing with our pooches, our dual snow blowing, etc.. I will always remember the fun. Peace.

So sorry to hear this. I grew up with LJ in Lake Forest and we had many a crazy night in our younger years. LJ had a keen sense of humor, sharp wit, and suffered no fools. I can still picture him driving "aggressively" in his 300K mile GTI.

Godspeed to Soc, whom I knew from my younger years in Northield, and his whole family.

So very sad. Last spoke with LJ when passing through on MC trip from SC in 2012. At the time LJ was very enthused about his business and relocation to CO.
As a long time friend of LJ's dad it is most unfortunate to learn of the family loss.
LJ, I know you are in a better place now!

So sad to hear about LJ & the impact on his family. I will always remember calling L J when visiting Durango on MC trip from SC; tried to get together but did not work out. We talked about his growing business success mirroring his dad´s success in starting an extremely successful company following retirement from the Winnetka Fire Dept.

My deepest sympathy to L J´s family & partner.
