Larry Black Obituary

Larry Earl Black, age 64, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida and former longtime resident of Bayfield, Colorado passed way in Fort Walton Beach, Florida on November 21, 2015 after a valiant fight with cancer.

Larry was born in Ogden, Utah on March 11, 1951 the only child of Richard Earl and Elva Degn Black. Larry graduated from Chaffey High School in Ontario, California and Mount San Antonio College in Pomona, California with a degree in Business Administration. Larry proudly served in the United States Army in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. Larry married Tempy McLendon on June 2, 1979 in Ontario, California.

Larry was a Program Manager for many years with General Dynamics in California. Upon moving and ""semi"" retiring to Bayfield, Colorado, he was able to do some bucket list jobs such as truck driver, postal carrier and cooking for hunting camps. He owned two small businesses and sold real estate for several years through Bayfield Realty, but his real love was being the Transportation Director for Bayfield School District for the last five years of his life. He loved his work, the children, the folks he worked with and the School District where he had volunteered for many years. Larry loved to hunt, skeet shoot, hike with his dogs, camp, work in his yard and attend events in which his grandson participated. Larry also loved to travel and was very blessed to be able to do that for the last two years. He and Tempy traveled to many of the 50 states in their fifth wheel. He was a people person who loved to laugh and had many friends.

Larry was pre-deceased by his father in 1995 and is survived by his wife, Tempy of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, mother Elva Black of Fort Walton Beach, FL, daughter and son-in-law Karen and Tony Minear of Collinsville, Illinois, daughter, son-in-law and grandson Terri, Dave and Brandon MacLaird of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, granddaughter Jennifer McFall of San Diego, California, granddaughter Stacy Orsborn of Lincoln, Nebraska, granddaughter Tiffany Brinegar of San Diego, California and five great-grandchildren.

No services are scheduled. Donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project in honor of Larry and his service.

Larry has been on my mind for the last couple of weeks. I met him through our mutual love of the "Big Yellow School Bus." I worked at the state and Larry was new to the transportation position. He knew I was always at work early and would call me around 6:30 with questions about the requirements. I really valued our early morning phone conversations. When we finished talking school buses, we laughed and talked a lot about our other shared interests, the great outdoors, hunting and shooting. I will always remember him as one of the very special people I met in Colorado Student Transportation. My thoughts and prayers are with all of his family!
