Kathryn Cheever Obituary

Dr. Kathryn A. Cheever, 1946-2016

Dr. Kathryn Cheever died on Saturday, February 20 after a prolonged battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband Richard, her sons Clayton and Benjamin, her daughter-in-law Jackie, her grandchildren Samuel and Sadye, and her two Irish Setters.

As director of the Center for NEW DIRECTIONS in Politics and Public Policy and a member of the Political Science Department at the University of Colorado Denver, Dr. Cheever encouraged and inspired students in the Durango based program to develop leadership capacities to address changing public priorities in communities, governmental jurisdictions, and nonprofits. She worked with the Colorado Department of Local Affairs and local governments in the region to establish paid internships for students, which often led to full-time positions. Hundreds of Four Corners residents acquired their master's degree under her leadership and guidance. She loved southwest Colorado and called the Rochester Hotel her second home. She had her favorite restaurants and coffee shops, and enjoyed Maria's Bookshop and other stops along Main Street.

The University of Colorado Denver is hosting a Memorial Event for the greater Colorado community on Thursday, March 10 at 5:30 p.m. in the Terrace Room of the Lawrence Street Center, 1380 Lawrence Street. Donations in her memory can be made to the Kathryn Cheever Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Colorado Denver here: www.giving.cu.edu/KathrynCheever

Rich,

I'm really sorry about your loss Rich and family.
Kathryn was a good friend and colleague and today I heard from a former student of her passing. She will be missed by a number of graduate students in Durango and surroundings for enabling graduate education and her relentless encouragement of students to participate in communities.
She was a good and compassionate human being.
My condolences to her family and loved ones.
