Karla Atkins Obituary

Karla Ann (Smith) Atkins, 66, of Durango, Colorado passed away on July 18, 2023 after an extended illness. Karla left behind her loving husband, William H. Atkins, her dogs, Zephyr and Rosie, and her sister, Jennifer Robertson. Karla was educated in computer science, and worked much of her career as a software developer in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Karla's profound and selfless respect for nature provided the framework for her life adventures. As a nature lover, Karla hiked, climbed, skied and kayaked. She loved hiking in the high country. As an animal lover, Karla volunteered with wildlife rehabilitation and supported animal shelters. She rode horses and enjoyed dog activities, including canine agility. Aside from outdoor life, Karla explored additional talents. She painted, crafted jewelry, played guitar, and loved to forage and cook up wild mushrooms. Karla was an independent yet sensitive individual who approached life with great passion. She will be missed by many, but she would prefer that we celebrate her life with the wonderful memories she has given us. Karla's spirit will be felt in the hearts of her family and friends, especially among the mountains she loved. A favorite mantra of hers was a quote by John Muir: "Climb the mountains and get their good tidings."
