We will miss Karl and Roxie´s visits as we walked in the neighborhood or seeing Roxie in the back car window. Karl always had with his stick and thermos for his multi-hour walks. He told us stories and we shared being born in Kansas and educators. He was a great man to know in our short time. Much condolences to his family.

Karl and I served as deans together at Florida Atlantic, and I always enjoyed being his colleague. Although he was an engineer, and my field was in the humanities, we inevitably found plenty to talk about, and I truly enjoyed his sense of humor. He was one of the good ones, a model for how all deans (and people in general) really ought to be.

One day in May of 2004, I was walking over my property and thinking where I might build my home. Next thing I knew, a gentleman walked up to me and commented on that "lovely piece of heaven." Little had I imagined that four months later that same gentleman would purchase the property from me and begin to craft his "dream home" in his mind. Five years later, he had a masterpiece that he would enjoy as his forever home!
Karl was a visionary and, as mentioned in the introduction, a true "gentleman"... with unabashed feistiness and a toxic grin. He will be missed by all his family, friends, and neighbors - even the ones he never met, because they'll hear about him from all those Shenandoah neighbors who were so privileged to have known him.
Rest in peace, my friend, and thank you for enriching my life.
