Joseph Monahan Obituary

Joseph J. Monahan, of Durango Colorado, passed away unexpectedly on October 23, 2024, at the age of 72. Born on May 5, 1952, Joe lived a life marked by adventure, dedication, and deep connections with family & friends.

A graduate of Mullen High School class of 1970, Joe went on to serve honorably in the US Army and was discharged in 1973. He later went on to earn his degree and his academic achievements laid the foundation for a long and respected career as a Traffic Signal Engineer with the Colorado Department of Transportation, where he later retired from.

In 1971, Joe married Nancy, beginning a partnership that spanned over five decades. Together they built a loving family that includes their four children, Cathy, Patrick, Jennifer, and Colleen. Joe was also a proud Grandpa to five devoted grandkids & six great-grandkids. His family was central to his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them-whether at home or out exploring the world.

Joe had an adventurous spirit that never waned. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who found peace and excitement in nature. A lifetime adrenaline seeker, he embraced off-road exploration as an active member of the Arizona Sun Riders Club, and loved hitting the trails on a SXS or 4-wheeler. He was deeply involved in genealogy research, enjoyed the Gem & Mineral Club, and loved to travel.

He was preceded in death by his beloved grandson Brian Monahan, his parents Robert and Winifred, and his brother Robert Monaghan.

He will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, unwavering dedication to those he loved, and a life lived fully on his own terms. May his memory bring comfort to all those who knew him. A graveside service will be held on June 14, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Greenmount Cemetery. 900 Cemetery Rd, Durango CO
