Joseph Conway Obituary

Joseph Stephen "Joe" Conway, born October 6, 1978, in Durango, Colorado, passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully in his sleep on December 27, 2025, in his hometown.

Joe had recently returned to his old stomping grounds, a place deeply rooted in his heart and family history. A proud fourth-generation member of the Durango community, he carried forward a legacy of connection, loyalty, and love for the place and people that shaped him.

Joe was born to Daniel and Patricia Conway and was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Patricia Joyce Samuels Conway, and his paternal grandparents, Joe Conway and Beverly Conway.

He is survived by his father, Daniel Conway, and by his fiancée and the love of his life, Leigh Wackenheim. Joe and Leigh were joyfully planning their wedding this coming July and were excited to begin their new chapter. He is also survived by many cherished friends and relatives, all of whom played an important role in his life.

Joe was known for his great sense of humor, natural kindness, and genuine ability to connect with others. Friendship came easily to him, and he gave it freely. It has been said that the quality of a man is defined by the quality of the friends he surrounds himself with-and by that measure, Joe was an extraordinary man.

Services will be held Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Noon at Greenmount Cemetery, followed immediately by a Celebration of Life.

"May the Lord bless Joe and preserve him from all evil and bring him to life everlasting. Eternal rest give to him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen."

I met Joe on the second day of second grade. We both were outside waiting for a bus home from a day at Riverview Elementary. It was only 3:30pm, but there were clouds in the La Plata´s and it was getting dark. That was my first conversation with Joe Conway, my first memory of Joe Conway. There are more, lots more. Childhood memories of sleeping over at his house, the apartment he shared with his mom near Riverview. It was my first time staying in an apartment, and I was always a bit nervous, I preferred for him to stay at my house, with my parents and my brothers. He always seemed to enjoy that too.
I remember summers playing baseball at Folsom Field, and Rank Park; finishing the game and then playing in that fun but unsafe waterslide looking confluence of Junction Creek and the Animas River. I remember being jealous of how far Joe could throw a baseball or football, even in elementary school he could throw from the outfield to home plate. I always needed a cut off man somewhere in the outfield. I remember the day he told me that his parents were getting a divorce, and I remember not knowing what to say about something like that.
We got older and Riverview Elementary turned to Smiley Middle School and then to Durango High School. I remember when Pat purchased that house off of 32nd street. There were more sleep overs and lot of Super Nintendo. Pat and Joe loved that house, they also loved the ferrets that Joe had in that house. I loved that we could play video games till late and then get up and walk to North City Market for snacks. Joe, I never liked the ferrets, they smell. I remember in our high school years the trip to Disneyland when at an IHOP in Barstow you spent $18.95 on what you thought were fruit and whip cream stuffed crapes, only to de disappointed with sour cream.
I remember you and I driving to Seattle after graduating to visit my grandmother, of not being able to agree on which music to listen to and settling on No Doubt´s Tragic Kingdom for twenty hours up, and twenty hours back. I remember moving to Hawaii in 2001 for university and you being the only friend who said they would visit and actually came to visit. I remembered when you and Darren met me in New York for the US Open and a Yankee´s game, I remember Darren getting us kicked out of a bar in New York after we just dropped $800 on bottle service.
My last conversation with Joe was on November twentieth, I don´t remember what we talked about in September 1987, but this year we talked about his moving home back to Durango. To be closer to his dad was important since Pat´s passing. He told me about his plans to build a house on his dad´s property in Bayfield and asked me if I remembered it? I do. As we aged and adult responsibility cut into time and money we saw each other less. The days are long but the years are short. I haven´t livened in Durango since 2009 and distance has its costs on relationships. We continued to exchanged texts from time to time and when I was in Denver we tried to connect for dinner or drinks, sometimes successfully sometimes not. I always appreciated that Joe was always there, perhaps I took that for granted. I took that for granted. Yesterday while looking for pictures from back in the day, something to send for Joe´s service; I came upon the 1997 Durango High Year book, he signed my book as Your Eternal Friend and as sappy as that sounded then, I find it very apt now. Joe, my Eternal Friend, I love you Brother.
