Joseph Archuleta Obituary

Expert angler and World War II veteran Joseph R. Archuleta died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, in Hesperus. He was 88.

Known to friends as "Joe," Mr. Archuleta was born Dec. 28, 1921, the oldest of Eduardo and Beatriz Archuleta's 13 children.

A longtime resident of Hesperus, Mr. Archuleta was born in Antonito, and he moved to Hesperus in 1927. He graduated from Durango High School in 1939. He worked with his father on the Rio Grande Southern Railroad during his youth.

Mr. Archuleta was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an aircraft mechanic in North Africa.

He returned to Hesperus after the war and worked as a carpenter and contractor for the rest of his life.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, but his true passion was fly-fishing the La Plata River.

He is remembered by many for teaching them the art of fly-fishing.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Kathy, who died in 1975.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Clorinda; sons Dan of New Jersey, Ed of Mancos, Tim of Denver; daughters Carolyn of Durango and Mary Jo of Grand Junction; two brothers; and three grandchildren.

A rosary will he held at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, 2010, at Sacred Heart Church. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Durango. Burial of remains will follow at Greenmount Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District.
