John Heller Obituary

John M. Heller, Jr., 74, passed away peacefully in his home on September 30, 2024, in Durango, Colorado with his wife and two sons at his bedside. Born on August 1, 1950, John lived a life marked by joy, adventure, and devotion to his family and career.

John grew up in Durango, graduated from Durango High School and Fort Lewis College. His professional journey began in the mountains he loved, teaching ski school at Purgatory Resort and Loveland. His passion for skiing led him to significant roles as a Ski School Director (Medicine Bow, WY), certified ski instructor and the Executive Director of The Professional Ski Instructors of America. Later, John transitioned to the automobile industry, where he spent the majority of his career, eventually becoming an executive at Mitsubishi Motors.

Beyond his professional life, John was an avid skier, marathon runner, hiker and cyclist completing the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic several times. He felt at home in the mountains and enjoyed traveling with his wife, Sandy. Known for his infectious laughter and knack for storytelling, John also enjoyed savoring fine red wines, and sharing jokes.

John leaves behind his wife, Sandra Emmanuel Heller; sons, Jesse (Leslie) and Channing (Mallory); brother, Bruce (Sandee); sister, Vanessa Jones (Brad); and grandchildren, Mason, Alma, Eleanora, and Karena, several nieces and nephews, cousins, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, John M. Heller, Sr. and Betty Joan Heller.

John's life was full of laughter, love and joy. John's family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to his caregiver, Jill, the hospice nurses, family, friends and neighbors. While no memorial service is planned, those wishing to honor John's memory are encouraged to make contributions to the Alzheimer's Association or Memorial Tree Plantings at [email protected].

I crossed paths with John as my boss for 2 or 3 years mid 90's while at Mitsubishi Motors. Nothing but great memories working with him. He cared about his team and he demonstrated that time and again. My sincere condolences to the Heller family for this tremendous loss.

If my memory serves me, John was the ski instructor I had in a ski class I took while going to Fort Lewis College back in the early 70s and taught me how to actually ski well. Condolences to his family.

I hired him at Chrysler Corporation and later worked with him at Mitsubishi Motors. He was a terrific guy; personable, warm, funny, full of enthusiasm, positive and hard working. He had an extraordinary and wonderful partner in Sandy. Those who knew him will have outstanding memories of the time they spent with him and the positive effect he had on their lives. I know I do!!
