John 'Skip' Edward Cave Jr.

Former Fort Lewis College Dean of Business School John "Skip" Edward Cave Jr., died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012, in New Orleans. He was 73.

Born June 21, 1939, in San Diego, he was raised on the family farm near Wilson, Wis. He was the first of seven children born to Evelyn Wanbaugh and John "Ed" Cave Sr. "Skip" was a nickname given by his father.

Mr. Cave graduated from Menomonie High School in Wisconsin in 1957 as class president. He studied industrial education at Stout State College. Before graduating from college.

The first in his family to graduate from college, Mr. Cave earned a bachelor's degree in business in 1966, a master's in management in 1970 and a doctorate in management in 1975 from the University of Minnesota.

In 1972, Mr. Cave moved with his family to New Orleans, where he taught business policy, psychology and management at Loyola University. The marriage to his wife, Carol, later ended in divorce.

In 1975, he became assistant dean in Loyola's College of Business Administration, was promoted to associate dean and director of the master of business administration program in 1980, and, in 1984, became dean of the Loyola Business School, where he served until resigning in 1989.

Mr. Cave had planned to leave administration to return to teaching, as well as spend more time fishing and hunting, until he agreed to visit FLC. He fell in love with Durango, and spent 14 years as the dean of the FLC School of Business Administration. He also served on a number of boards and as co-chairman of the accreditation committee for the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. He eventually served 32 years in academia.

Mr. Cave was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman.

"He had great respect for God's creation and its beauty," his family said. "Skip had a natural talent to find, buy, fix and sell almost anything, including cars, trucks, boats and motors. He loved to 'deal' and had a mind for business."

Mr. Cave is survived by his son, Jeff Cave, of Buckingham, Pa.; daughter, Shelby Hunter, of Metairie, La.; former wife, Carol Cave; brothers Sam Cave of St. Paul and Patrick Cave of Seattle; sister, Mary Jarvis, of Wausau, Wis.; five grandchildren; and numerous extended family members.

Visitation will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, with a memorial service immediately afterward at 2 p.m., at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St., in New Orleans. A reception will be held immediately afterward.
