Joe Trujillo Obituary

Joe R. Trujillo, father of Bayfield resident Annette Shonk, died of complications from cancer in Cañon City on June 12, 2009. He was 77.

Mr. Trujillo was born to August and Eufelia (Montaño) Trujillo in Malachite, in Huerfano County, on Jan. 6, 1932.

On June 28, 1952, he married Dorothy Ortiz in Florence.

In his younger days, he was an avid fly fisherman. He especially enjoyed fishing on Cebolla Creek near Powderhorn. He enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, hunting, cooking, singing, watching sports and woodworking. He loved his time out at the farm tying onions.

In 1972, Mr. Trujillo formed his own company, Trujillo Construction, where he worked as chief executive officer and a cement finisher until his retirement in 1986.

Mr. Trujillo was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy H. Trujillo; infant son Lawrence Trujillo; and granddaughter Dionne Trujillo.

He is survived by his sons Joseph Trujillo and Danny Trujillo, both of Florence, and Michael Trujillo of Englewood; daughter, Annette Shonk, of Bayfield; sisters Beatrice Gallardo and Joyce DelaRosa, both of Florence, Cora Zamarripa of Denver and DeeDee Franco and Stella Bobian, both of Pueblo; brother Victor Trujillo of Florence; companion, Barbara Armstrong, of Florence; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at St. Benedict's Parish, 619 W. Second St., in Florence. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 2009, also at St. Benedict's.  The Rev. Douglas R. Hunt will officiate. Burial will take place after the Mass at Union Highland Cemetery in Florence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK, 73123-1718; or the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA, 22312.
