Joan Quadland Obituary

Joan Barbara Quadland died on December 2, 2022, at her home in Cincinnati, Ohio. Joan was born on September 26, 1932, in Irvington, NJ as the only child of Margaret and Fredrick Hueneke. Joan graduated Summa Cum Laude from New Jersey State Teachers College and married Richard G. Quadland on July 30, 1955, in Essex, New Jersey with a honeymoon at Niagra Falls. Joan started her teaching career in New Jersey before moving to El Paso, Texas with Richard to continue her teaching career and raise her family.

Joan (Mom) was a true friend to everyone she met. This was especially true with her "teacher buddies" at Hughey Elementary School and Alta Vista Elementary School whose genuine, deep, loving, fun, lifelong friendships she truly cherished over many decades.

Mom was an exceptionally talented and gifted art teacher who devoted herself to every single one of her students. She so appreciated being able to teach each kid and watch them grow as individuals with their new knowledge, but she was absolutely fascinated watching her students create real "works of art" no matter what the assignment was. It wasn't just watching the creation of something new and beautiful and unique; it was watching those moments when each child realized that it was their creation! She loved watching her students realize that whatever talent and effort their creation took, it not only came from within them, but they never even knew it was there.

Mom was also a giver. That's what she did her whole life. For her mother, her husband, her children, her friends and people she just newly met. The only thing that I know for sure mom ever wanted was not something for herself; it was wanting to know what the best thing was that she could do to help someone else out. To make their life easier; to make their day brighter.

When Joan retired from 30+ years of teaching, she and Richard moved to Bayfield, Colorado. This was truly her home; she loved the mountains, the pine trees, and especially the grove of aspen trees (quakies) on their property.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents Fredrick and Margaret Hueneke, her husband Richard Quadland and her grandson Hunter Ryan Candelaria. She is survived by her son Robert Quadland, daughter Lynda Quadland, daughter (in-law) Zelda (Lori) Quadland, grandson David Quadland, (step) grandchildren Deanna Hill, Elizabeth Hill, and Richard Hill Jr., great grandson Braxton Hunter James Hill, sister (in-law) Janet Quadland, niece Jodie Quadland (Walker) and grandnephews Brandon, Justin and Jonathan Walker.

A memorial service for Joan is scheduled for 2:00-pm on May 20, 2023, at Pine River Cemetary in Bayfield, Colorado.

Ms. Quadland was my language arts teacher in the 7th grade at Alta Vista in El Paso, Tx. I am now almost 58 years old. Ms. Quadland had a profound impact on my life. I only wish that I could have told her. She was equally stern, kind and fair. She made me feel seen and heard at a time when my home life was tumultuous at best. She was an awesome teacher that made learning fun. I´ve never forgotten her and have periodically tried to locate her over the years. I was saddened to try again just a week ago only to discover that she had passed. I have always shared that she was my favorite teacher of all time. I am blessed beyond measure to have known her once upon a time and can say without a doubt that my life has been the better for it. My condolences to her dear family.

I knew Mrs. Quadland through my friendship with her son Robert. She was always friendly and never judgmental, even in my teen years when there was plenty to judge. Her home was always a comfortable and welcoming place. I have warm memories of her engaging me in real conversation about my life. She clearly cared about children.

I was truly blessed to have known the Quadlands for the past 20 years. Joan was genuinely someone who made a difference in my life and it is a lesser world without her in it. Such a charming and delightful person inside and out.
I will never forget how on a trip back from Oklahoma to see we stopped by to see her. The return trip from Oklahoma to Utah had been see family so I had my wife and three young daughters with me. About six months later we lost our youngest (Ellie) and I will never forget how Joan reached out to me and Holly to console us during this time of grief. She ALWAYS asked me about Holly and the kids EVERY time I spoke with her after that. Truly a special person filled with empathy for those around her.
Thank you for being part of my life. I will never forget you. Hopefully I can make it to the service on May 20th.

Thank you for this lovely obituary. A special thank you for including a younger photo of Joan. I met her at Calvary Presbyterian church about 20 years ago so the larger photo was easily recognizable.
