Joan Dixon Obituary

Former Durango resident Joan Elizabeth Dixon died of complications from cancer Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, in Baldwin Park, Calif. She was a week shy of her 71st birthday.

Mrs. Dixon was born to George and Bessie Sackman on Sept. 20, 1939, in Los Angeles.

On Dec. 22, 1962, she married Clovis Dixon in West Covina, Calif. The marriage ended in divorce after 23 years.

She lived in Durango from 1969 to 1979. She and her husband, Clovis, owned B & F Equipment & Supply on Main Avenue. While living here, Mrs. Dixon was a member of the Durango Kennel Club and several other organizations. Her family said she had many fond memories of her time in Durango.

Mrs. Dixon was a teacher. She worked with the Durango Day Nursery. She was an elementary school teacher for many years in the Bassett Unified School District in California.

She is survived by her son, Scott W. Dixon, of Anaheim, Calif.; daughter, Christina Hayes of Park City, Utah; brothers, George Sackman of Sacramento, Calif., and Bill Sackman of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a large extended family.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. today, Sept. 17, 2010, at Fairhaven Memorial Park, 1702 Fairhaven Ave., in Santa Ana, Calif.
