Jim Vorwald Obituary

James "Jim" Paul Vorwald, 73, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 25, 2025, after a progressive illness caused by a stroke he suffered in 2013. Jim was born on July 15, 1951, to Paul George and Peggy Lou Vorwald. He grew up in El Paso, Tx, and spent most of his adult life in Durango, Colorado, where he built a life rooted in service, family, and a deep love of the outdoors.

Jim was the middle of three children and was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Vorwald. He is survived by his brother, David Vorwald of Norman, Oklahoma. Jim is also survived by his three daughters: Jamie Long and her husband Tyler, Cora Harrison and her husband Brian, and Peggy Vorwald and her husband Matt. He was the proud grandfather of two grandchildren, Corbin and Cora. He also leaves behind his nephew, Brock Vorwald, his wife Ginny and their three children.

While a certified public accountant by profession, Jim's passion for the outdoors and giving back to others is what defined his legacy. He loved nothing more than hiking the Colorado mountains with his beloved dog, Pearl. Jim was known for his commitment to community service, particularly through his volunteer work with the Boys and Girls Club of La Plata County and as an active member of the Kiwanis Club.

Throughout his life, Jim was also a sports enthusiast. He found joy in both playing and watching sports, but perhaps some of his most treasured memories were as a referee for middle and high school football games across Texas, Arizona, and Colorado.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held at a later date in Durango, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Boys and Girls Club of La Plata County or a charity of your choice that reflects Jim's dedication to helping others.

Jim's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and his legacy of service, kindness, and love for the outdoors will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to call him a friend, father, grandfather, and brother.
