Jim Ash Obituary

Jim passed away peacefully at home with family. He grew up in southern California and pursued his passion for highschool football. He spent his college freshman year abroad in Japan with a Japanese family. He went on to graduate from Berkely. In 1970 Fort Lewis hired him out of the Harvard Graduate School as their East Asian History Professor. In 1975 he started the FLC-Japan exchange program that included life with Japanese families. He took 7 Fort Lewis groups to Japan over the next 15 years for a total of 90 students. Aside from that he went on to teach many other courses in 5 different academic departments throughout the years. Establishing close bonds with FLC students over 38 years was one of the great joys of his life. Jim is preceded in death by his son, Tyler Ash. Survived by his wife, Ruth, son Kenny and granddaughter Kinley. Also survived by his siblings, David Ash, Janet McAnlis, Darlene Warner and Coleen Young. Special thanks to a great Doctor, Erin Clarkinson, terrific hospice nurses and the love and kindness of the staff of wonderful nurses at SW Oncology. His final requests for cremation and no funeral have been honored.

Jim was my favorite professor who convinced me to study religious studies. I will always think fondly of him. I couldn“t wait to take his next class.

Jim Ash & I worked at the Fort Lewis Reed library building for many years. He always stayed patient and calm no matter what crisis was going on. He treated everyone one with a warm respect. Just a great person.

Jim was an intelligent, caring man who enjoyed really engaging with people of all ages. As his former sister-in-law, I know he was an important extension of his and his wife's families. He contributed much to FLC, and was highly respected by staff and students. He was witty, and so kind, and always had something positive to say. Uncle Jim will be sorely missed.

Presently, I am writing this farewell to Jim from Kobe, Japan. I was in the first group of Fort Lewis College students to take the 1975 trip to Japan. Jim, I am so glad I was able to talk to you on the phone awhile back to tell you how impactful that Japanese trip was on me personally. So often we do not know the ripple effect we have on people's experiences. After all these years I still have dear friends from that group who continue to influence my life today. I have now been blessed to return to Japan to work for the Japanese people. After 49 years I reunited with my host family in Uji-shi since I have been here! To see FOUR generations now of that family is just incredible! Jim, you shared with so many how important we are as humans across this world to be caring and kind as we share this human experience with people. Everyone on this planet desires to be friendly and courteous and I have experienced this many times because of the opportunity you gave to us. May your family be comforted during this time and KNOW what an impact you were on so many! God rest your soul!

He was such an interesting History teacher- I had him for several courses. He was kind and respectful and never too busy to answer questions. A truly decent human being. Jim will be missed.

Dear Ruth, Kenny and Kinley, I am so sorry for your loss. I have fond memories visiting with Jim at the "break table" on Hwy 3, and also remember sharing stories at the old Trimble Hot Springs . All good, fun memories. Katie B
