Jane Elizabeth Short, age 73, was born April 16, 1952, and passed away on Friday, July 25, 2025, in the care of her loving family, Hospice of Mercy and the compassionate Comfort Keepers caregivers. Jane grew up in Littleton, CO, an only child of a single mother. She graduated from Bear Creek High School in 1970 and eventually her college studies took her to Colorado State University where in the fall of 1973 she met her husband to be, Steve. Jane and Steve were married on June 8, 1975, and soon moved to Raleigh, NC, where Steve would be attending graduate school at North Carolina State University. Jane loved sewing and fabric arts, and as an accomplished seamstress worked professionally as a garment fitting and alterations seamstress in a large department store in Raleigh. Colorado called Jane and Steve back west, then feeling fortunate to make Durango their home where Jane comfortably settled into Steve's multigenerational family roots, and where they started their own family. Jane enrolled at Fort Lewis College, completing an Associates of Business degree. Following graduation, she became an employee of the College in the Records Office, where she worked for almost 26 years until her retirement. Jane loved to travel, and upon retirement looked forward to the flexibility she would have to share more travel adventures with Steve and friends. Those travels took her to 38 foreign countries and 44 states. Jane also loved being a grandmother and her two grandchildren were the delight of her life, giving her inspiration in her final years of life as she undertook the battle against serious medical challenges. In 2013, Jane developed Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer. Despite often severe pain along with twelve years of perpetual chemotherapy and maintenance treatments, she stayed steadfast and resilient, enjoying life to its fullest. Following a relatively new treatment provided through the Colorado Blood Cancer Institute in Denver in October 0f 2024, for the first time in twelve years Jane was cancer free. The elation of having conquered Multiple Myeloma was eclipsed, however, by a rare neurological side effect which was diagnosed in early June and quickly claimed her life. Jane is survived by her husband of 50 years, Steve, son Jonathan and his wife Kelly, grandchildren Ingrid and Abel, as well as numerous other extended family members. A memorial service and reception will be held in the Fort Lewis College Ballroom located in the Student Union Building on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 10:00am.For those wishing to honor Jane's life with a memorial contribution, gifts can be made to the Jane and Steve Short Scholarship for Nursing at Fort Lewis College through the Fort Lewis College Foundation, 1000 Rim Drive, Durango, CO 81301 or at the Foundation page on the FLC website at
