James Kilpatrick Obituary

James "Mick" Kilpatrick was born in Tucson, AZ March 21, 1940 to Dawson "Bud" and Deanne Kilpatrick. He passed away peacefully on January 25, 2022 at his Durango home due to complications from a fall the week before.

Mick spent the majority of his youth in the lovely town of Independence, CA where everyone knew everyone and he learned the importance of friends and neighbors. He pursued his college years in California and married Betty Bailey Kilpatrick in 1964. Betty and Mick spent the next 7 years in Orange County during which their 3 children were born - Kevin Kilpatrick (Silvia), Kathleen Kilpatrick Gardner (John), and Marlene Kilpatrick. It was while in California that Mick started his construction career. He and Betty moved their family to Durango, CO in 1971 where he pursued his independent building career and became a partner in Hermosa Builders specializing in commercial buildings throughout the Four Corners.

After their children grew up, Mick and Betty divorced and he eventually joined the LaPlata County Building Department as a Building Inspector. He married Ruth Katzin in 1998 and added her four children to his life - Cindy Gillaspy, Jim Gillaspy (Leah), Cathie Duncan (Scott), and Peggy Leek (Dan). Between both families, Mick boasted 10 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and numerous grand doggies and kitties.

Mick was an ambitious outdoorsman enjoying skiing, hiking, backpacking, hunting, as well as autocross, pro-rallying, and Cowboy Action Shooting. He was an avid follower of baseball, football, Formula One, and just about any other action sport. And, as all family members can attest to, Mick was passionate about the art of cooking.

No services are planned at this time, but all family members would love to hear stories you have to share. Send to ([email protected]).
