Herbert McDaniel Obituary

Bloomfield man and World War II veteran Herbert Arnold McDaniel died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010. He was 90.

Mr. McDaniel was born in Aztec on Feb. 16, 1920, to Fera M. and Clara McDaniel, the descendent of Hammond, N.M., settlers.

Most of his early life was spent in San Juan County except for brief periods in Tooele, Utah, and Pagosa Junction. He attended school in Aztec, leaving just short of high school graduation to work to help support his family.

Mr. McDaniel enlisted in the Army Air Corps at the start of World War II and served as a B-25 bomber mechanic in the Philippines.

He was proud of his military service in the Pacific and spoke often of his experiences, including catching malaria.

He was honorably discharged in 1945 at the end of the war with the rank of staff sergeant.

Mr. McDaniel married Helen Barlow Wood in Aztec in 1950 and welcomed her children into his life.

The couple had a son, Gary.

Mr. Daniel worked many occupations, including truck driver, miner in Silverton and gas-plant operator and technician.

He took a position with El Paso Natural Gas Co. in 1953 and retired with the same affiliate in the early 1980s.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Family and friends recall he had farming and ranching in his blood.

His son Gary McDaniel said his father worked hard all his life and was a man of his word.

"He wasn't the most politically correct, but he had a tender heart. He loved kids, and he really loved to help people," Gary McDaniel said.

Mr. McDaniel is preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Helen.

He is survived by son, Gary McDaniel, and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Home, 103 East Ute Street in Farmington.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, at the Bloomfield Cemetery in Bloomfield with Bishop Gerald Spangler conducting.

Full military honors will be provided by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter and the New Mexico Military Honor Guard.
