Herbert Batchelor Obituary

Herbert Lloyd Batchelor passed away on October 20, 2024 peacefully, at 95 years of age. Herb was born in Bayfield, CO on March 6, 1929 to Charles and Martha Batchelor where he grew up with his sisters on the family ranch.

Herb went to school and graduated in Bayfield, CO. After graduation, Herb worked various jobs. He worked as a truck driver hauling lumber, uranium ore out of Monument Valley, and delivered gas for Brennan's Oil. In this time, he also met the love of his life, Eurma. They were married on November 23, 1950. After being a driver for a few years, he began working in the auto parts industry. He started Superior Auto in 1964 and had stores in Durango, Pagosa Springs, and Cortez. After a few years, Herb, Eurma and their son, Denver made the decision to open their own family auto parts store called he Auto Parts Palace in 1976. Herb helped run the family business until he retired in 2016.

Herb was involved in many different organizations in the Four Corners area. He served on the board of directors for the Appaloosa Horse Club, the Quarter Horse Club, and the American Red Cross. He was a colonel of the Colorado Mounted Rangers for the state of Colorado. He also worked as a volunteer for Search and Rescue in La Plata County and was an announcer for the high school rodeos, both locally and on a state level. Herb also volunteered for the La Plata County Fair and supported the local 4H Clubs. He enjoyed hunting, camping, and riding ATVs with his family.

Herb is survived by his son Denver (Cheryl) Batchelor, granddaughter Jerri (Michael) Heffernan, grandson Cody (Jennifer) Batchelor, and three great grandchildren (Granger, Macyn, and Koda). He is also survived by his sister Ruth Jameson and various nephews and nieces.

Services will be held on November 16, 2024 at Durango's Cowboy Church at 10:30AM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you would please donate to our local 4H Clubs, FFA Clubs, or high school rodeo participants.

We are so sad to hear of Herb's passing. Both he and Eurma gave so generously of their time and talents to the local community. They were a big part of countless horse and rodeo events. They helped keep the western heritage alive in Durango. We were always greeted with Herb's wonderful smile. We send our sincere condolences to Denver, Cheryl and their family.

I have known only a handful of people that touched so many lives and will be remembered fondly by so many as the Batchelor's. With a lump in my throat I read Herb´s obituary and smiled. God bless

We are so sad to hear that Herb passed away. He was such a presence at our horse shows and high school rodeos. He and Eurma were so supportive and loving. We cherish every memory of both of them, and our love and condolences go out to the family. ~Rena (Bacus) Cole and Ronda (Bacus) Conrad
