Henry Hansen Obituary

Henry Steven Hansen, (Steve) 71, passed away peacefully in his bed on the evening of December 15, 2022 under a gorgeous sunset. He was with his beloved wife Peggy and their two dogs in his dream home near Durango, Colorado. He was wearing his biking shirt that read "OPEN ROAD OPEN MIND OPEN HEART" which serves as a glimpse into who he was and how he lived.

He is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Mearl, and his sister Cheryl. He is survived by his wife Peggy, daughter Lindsey and her two daughters Jasey and Zoe, step-daughter Julie and her husband Ed and son Jake, step-daughter Layla, his sister Susan and his brother Dan. Steve also loved and was loved by many of his extended family, in laws, and friends.

Steve was born in Chico, California and his father's career took the family to different locations in the West during Steve's formative years including California, New Mexico and Texas. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1977 with a degree in Agricultural Engineering.

Steve began his federal career working for the US Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) in Fort Defiance, Arizona before transferring to the US Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) in Durango where his deep love of the area was born and nurtured. His tales of field work in the remote locales of the Four Corners are legendary. He then moved with the agency to Albuquerque where he made significant contributions to the management of the waters of the Rio Grande and Pecos Rivers.

The family will host a Celebration of Life at his home on Saturday, May 20, 2023.
