Gregory Maxey Obituary

Gregory Arthur Maxey was born in Elmhurst, Illinois on July 6 1960. He passed away on Saturday March 15 2025 in Grand Junction from a gradual decline caused by many ailments. Greg was the middle child of Gerald and Jane Maxey. His siblings are Julie and Rick.

Greg was the most gentle and sweetest soul that many of us are ever likely to meet. He adored family pets Snoopy and Callie.

Greg attended Elmhurst schools until the family moved to Durango in 1974 when he was in the 8th grade. He graduated from DHS in 1979.

The family, minus Julie, moved to Tucson AZ in 1980 to be near our grandmother Ruth Maxey. Jane, Jerry, and Greg moved back to Durango in 1996 into their 4th Ave home.

Greg worked at Wendy's for 22 years keeping the dining area clean at lunchtime. Greg was very active in Special Olympics. An exceptional athlete, he competed in five different sports. He was an accomplished league bowler and had a powerful delivery down the lane.

We all have a quick wit that we inherited from Dad, and Greg's timely comedic observations are cherished family memories. His sports knowledge and retention of player statistics was legendary. He loved " doing his picks" for pro football with his best friend Steve Nyikos. Greg was an ardent fan of all Chicago and Colorado professional teams. He had a vast music collection and sang along - loudly!

Jerry and Greg moved to Grand Junction in 2020 for health care and to be closer to Julie.

Greg is preceded in death by our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. He is survived by his sister Julie ( Elvis) , niece Gina, nephew Tony ( Tara), one great niece, and twin great nephews. His brother Rick ( Kirsten) and niece Leena. Durango relatives Stan and Barb Sowers, and Liz ( Ken) Buras. Also many cousins and Uncle Monte ( Donna) Williams of Austin TX.

Greg leaves behind loving family friends, neighbors, and the lives he touched with Special Olympics and his great work at Wendy's.

Let Greg's lasting legacy be this: Always treat people with kindness, compassion, and respect. A thoughtless, unkind comment can resonate for a lifetime.

Donations can be made to Special Olympics in his honor.

Greg's ashes will be placed with our parents at a private family memorial.
