Grace Swanson Obituary

Longtime Durango resident Grace Marie Swanson died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at Mercy Regional Medical Center. She was 80.

Mrs. Swanson was born to John and Eva Musil on June 27, 1931, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She grew up in Boulder.

After graduating from University of Colorado with a degree in chemistry and medical technology, she worked as a lab technician.

In June 1957, she married Dr. Robert Swanson.

They moved to Durango in 1961, and she was the office secretary for his medical practice.

"She was a loving wife, homemaker, partner, compassionate friend of many and lover of horses," her family said.

Mrs. Swanson raised Morgan horses and through the years earned many show ribbons as well as the respect of the national Morgan horse community, her family said. She also was a longtime member of Chapter IT of the women's Philanthropic Educational Organization.

Mrs. Swanson is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dr. Robert Swanson, of Durango; and five nieces and one nephew.

A celebration of life will be held this spring.
