Gilbert Esquibel Obituary

Durango native Gilbert O. Esquibel Jr., died from complications of a genetic liver condition Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, in Denver. He was 42.

Mr. Esquibel was born to Gilbert O. and Loretta (Lucero) Esquibel on June 30, 1968, in Durango. He graduated from Durango High School in 1987.

He married Wunderca Carl in 1987 in Durango. The marriage later ended in divorce.

Mr. Esquibel served in the Army for 10 years as a supply sergeant. Most recently, he worked for Waste Management as a district manager in Divide. He had lived in Cascade since January 2010 and in the Colorado Springs area since 1997.

"He loved fishing and hunting, a good practical joke and large family meals," his family wrote. "He was a family man first and foremost. Gilbert was known as 'Sarge' to his family."

Mr. Esquibel is survived by his parents, Loretta and Robert Romero of Durango; grandmother Liz Lucero of Durango; son, Gilbert Esquibel III, of Denver; twin daughters, Kayla Esquibel and Leah Esquibel, and daughter, Isabella Esquibel, all of Colorado Springs; sisters Nicole Trujillo of Durango and Cory Romero of Colorado Springs; former wife and friend, Wunderca Esquibel, of Colorado Springs; and one grandson.

A rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 254 East Fifth Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, also at Sacred Heart in Durango. Burial will take place at Greenmount Cemetery.
