Evelyn Deering-Timmons Obituary

Former Silverton resident Evelyn Lee Deering-Timmons died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, in Paradise Valley, Ariz. She was 85.

Also known as "Toni," she was born to Claude and Evelyn Deering on Sept. 29, 1926, in Silverton. Her parents were longtime residents of Silverton and Durango.

Mrs. Deering-Timmons spent her early years in the small mountain town, spending her summers with her family at Electra Lake, where she made many lifelong friends from Durango and the Four Corners.

After her graduation from the University of Colorado in the class of 1949 with a degree in pharmacy, she settled in the Phoenix suburb of Paradise Valley, where she became one of the first female pharmacists in Arizona in 1951.

She married Dr. Richard P. Timmons on Nov. 4, 1952, at her parents' ranch in Hermosa. The marriage later ended in divorce.

"Evelyn was a pioneer and nationally renowned figure in the use of bio-identical hormones for women," her family said, "and supported the first hospice care in the Valley of the Sun.

Mrs. Deering-Timmons received numerous national awards, including Professional Compounding Centers of America's award for Compounding Pharmacist of the Year. She was the first woman elected president of the American College of Apothecaries.

An avid hiker, she spent many summers returning to Silverton with her family to climb the various high mountains. She had many interests in her life, but her family said her greatest was serving doctors and their patients in the greater Phoenix area. She owned and operated her pharmacy for more than 50 years.

Mrs. Deering-Timmons is survived by her sons, Steven Timmons and Roderick Timmons, both of Phoenix; brother, former La Plata County Commissioner Claude E. "Bud" Deering Jr., of Durango; and four grandchildren.

Cremation has occurred. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at Paradise Valley Community Church, 4242 East Greenway Road. Burial will occur in the family plot at Hillside Cemetery in Silverton in the spring.
