Earl Fortin Obituary

Durango resident Earl Joseph Fortin died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, in Durango. He was 75.

Mr. Fortin was born to Willard and Elsie Fortin on Nov. 12, 1935, in Bay City, Mich. He graduated from Visitation Catholic High School in Michigan and earned a degree from St. Joseph College in Indiana.

His professional life included work in the fields of carpentry, banking, real estate, financial planning and sales.

On Feb. 21, 1959, he married Roberta "Bobbie" Snider in Ft. Wayne, Ind.

The Fortins moved to Durango in 1983, where Mr. Fortin was vice president of Centennial Savings Bank. After returning to Bay City in 2002, he returned to Durango in 2009.

He was a member of Visitation Catholic Church in Michigan and St. Columba and Sacred Heart Catholic churches in Durango.

He volunteered with the Lions Club of Durango, the Durango Business Association and his parishes.

Mr. Fortin was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Roberta Fortin, in 2007.

He is survived by his children Daniel Fortin and Andre Fortin, both of Durango, Nicole Fortin of Honolulu, Leslie Fortin of Tampa, Fla., Colette Nordyke of Lake Orion, Mich., William Fortin of Wales, Great Britain, and Monique Baca of Anchorage, Alaska; sister Marilynn Sparks of New Jersey; brothers David Fortin and Chris Fortin, both of Bay City; and six grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at Visitation Catholic Church in Bay City. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, also at Visitation Catholic. Burial will take place afterward at Calvary Cemetery in Bay City.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to help with funeral expenses may be sent c/o Andre Fortin, 2935 West Third Ave., Durango, CO 81301.
