Dora Hunt Obituary

Hesperus resident Dora Ellen Hunt died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, at her daughter's home near Breen. She was one month shy of her 92nd birthday.

Known as "DoDo," she was born to Robert and Mary Conner on Nov. 12, 1918, in Breen. For her first years of school, Mrs. Hunt walked across the canyon to attend the Squeaksquawk School, later attending the Longhollow and Center schools. She went on to live with an aunt in Durango while she attended Durango High School for a couple of years.

On Jan. 9, 1937, she married William Carl Hunt in Durango. Mrs. Hunt was a true pioneer, and she and her husband, "Billy," lived in an old log cabin until 1995. They owned a herd of cattle for many years, selling the milk to a dairy in Albuquerque.

She loved children, and her family said Mrs. Hunt was quite proud of the fact that she was the "commander and chief" baby sitter at Calvary Baptist Church for more than 40 years and a proud grandmother of her extended clan.

When she wasn't spending time with family, she enjoyed reading and drawing.

Mrs. Hunt was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, William Hunt, in October 2003; sons Richard Hunt and Thomas Hunt; daughter Wilma Chancey; and grandson Lyndal Hunt.

She is survived by her daughter Harriet Fehringer of Hesperus; son Paul Hunt of Albuquerque; brother Bryan Conner of Hesperus; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8 2010, at Hood Mortuary Chapel, 1261 East Third Ave. A funeral will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, also at Hood. Burial will take place afterward at Crestview Cemetery, which is located near Elmore's Corner at U.S. Highway 160 and Colorado Highway 172.
