Donnie Moomey Obituary
Born in York, Nebraska, Don accomplished much in his life. He was inducted into the York College hall of fame for basketball. A retired Colorado State Patrol Major, he was instrumental in reducing death rates on stretches of road in Colorado (he always credited his officers). He founded the Four Corners Underwater Search and Rescue, and the Four State Peace Officers Association. President of the High Noon Rotary in Durango, Co., he continued as a member of the rotary in retirement. An artisan woodworker, he could do anything he set his mind to. Generous with his time and talents, he built beautiful furniture for his family. An ocean lover, he was an avid sailor and enjoyed skiing, waterskiing, scuba diving, bird watching, and rodeoing. Don always put his family first. He was fun and funny, a great weaver of stories, a practical joker, and a very social person. This life will for sure be duller without you, Dad!
There will be a gathering later this year to celebrate Don's life.
In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to Rotary International.

I met Don in 2007 at a conference of the Four State Peace Officers Association. Twenty-two years after founding the organization, it was still going strong. I invited him then to share the history of the Association. And I recorded his words. A few months ago, I was asked to relate the history of the Association to this year's conference attendees. I still had Don's recording and used that as the basis for my remarks. Don had said at the first annual banquet held at Durango's Strater Hotel, that it was his hope that the Association would still be a viable and beneficial organization ten years later. Today, thirty-nine years after the Four State Peace Officers Association was incorporated in the State of Colorado, it is still going strong.
Don's legacy to public safety continues. I'm glad I got to meet him.
