Donald Yale Obituary

Donald A. Yale, 92, passed away at home on Jan. 5, 2021, after a short decline, with Laura, his wife of 40 years at his side. Per his wishes, no funeral or memorial will be held.

Don was born and raised in Illinois by Charles and Vivian Roberts-Jones Yale. At a very early age, he developed a fascination with flying and joined the Navy in May, 1945, earning his wings as a pilot, patrolling the coasts of Alaska and Washington state after WWII. At age 52, he fulfilled his lifelong dream and purchased a small plane to explore the skies of the Southwest where he spent most of his life. Following his service, he earned two engineering degrees, the MBA and DBA. He worked in the defense and geological exploration industries, followed by a career teaching at the university level.

In 1954, he married Jean Koons with whom he had four children. The family lived for most of their marriage in Colorado and spent weekends camping and hiking the mountains around Central City with their burros Pepita and Tina toting the family's gear. The couple parted ways in 1978 and Don married Laura Richardson in 1981, whom he met while both were teaching at Northern Arizona University. Their most memorable times were on the dance floor on land and at sea, always requesting "their song," Satin Doll by Duke Ellington. Throughout his life, Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, and hiking with his sons and various colleagues.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Charles, sister-in-law, Helen, his daughter-in-law, Darlene, and son-in-law, Norman Lindauer. In addition to his wife, Laura, he is survived by his daughter, Diane Lindauer, sons John, David (Katherine) and Ian (Susan), grandsons Justin and Derek Lindauer, Jackson Yale, and granddaughters Kailey Rothstrom and Joy Matti (James) and two great-grandchildren.
