Donald Southworth Obituary

Don Southworth, 80, passed away on December 11, 2017 in Durango, CO, surrounded by his family. Don was born Aug 16, 1937 in Saginaw, MI to Ben and Anne Southworth. Don had a life-long career in sales and management with General Motors and Penske Motors in Detroit, retiring after more than 40 years. In 1957, Don married Mary Waina and together they had two sons, Scott and Roger Southworth, both of Durango. Don loved sailing, fishing, coaching youth sports, and found great joy spending time with family and friends. In 1999, Don and Mary moved to Durango to follow their grandchildren and settled in Falls Creek Ranch, where he earned the nickname "Safety Don." Don was a Lusche fellow with Kiwanis honoring his 15 years of leadership, service, volunteering and pancake flipping, and was also a long-time member of Christ the King Lutheran Church. He was always eager to lend a hand and grab the heavy end of the board, usually accompanied by a faithful dog companion.

Don is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Kay Spedding. He is survived by Mary, his wife of 60 years, his sons, and four grandchildren, Ben, Ellen, Lydia and Sam Southworth, all of Durango. A man of faith, we rejoice that his soul has been released to heaven. A service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Memorial donations may be made to Christ the King Lutheran Church or to the Alzheimer's Association.

Hello Mary, I am not sure if you remember me. We went to church in Taylor. I was in the choir that you directed. God bless you and your family. Our oldest daughter, Kimberly went to prom with your son. Jim and I relocated to Sturgis MI 38 years ago. We were married for 68 years. Jim passed away last September just 3 weeks after our anniversary. We have 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 8 great grand children. I thought of you and Don while going through photos and found the one with Kim and your son on prom night. I can't believe how time goes by.
