Donald Hayes Obituary

Donald B. Hayes - A man to remember.

In the eloquent words of one of his granddaughters, "The world lost a true gentleman on January 9th. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather - Don Hayes, 85, was a generous, kind-hearted, witty, loving and unbelievably intelligent individual. Dapper and debonair, Pinochle fiend, and crossword savant. A classy rascal loved by so many."

Don was a native of Chicago and the first in his family to graduate from college, which he credits to the G.I. bill following service in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. Don and Judy lived in several states throughout their marriage, deciding to settle in Durango in 2005 for their retirement because of the vibrant art community and the many activities that are part of the fabric of the town.

Don was an active member of both the Art Center and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Don also enjoyed golf, fly fishing with his sons and grandsons and cooking with family and friends. His sense of humor and whit endeared him to many.

In his last month of life, he lifted the spirits of those who had come to say their farewells, relating how grateful he had been blessed with good health, a rewarding and successful career and his marriage to Judy. He viewed the end of his life with equanimity and a generosity of spirit that was truly inspiring. Don is survived by his wife, 7 children, 14 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren - all whom will miss him dearly.

A memorial service is being planned for later this spring. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Durango Art Center would be greatly appreciated.
