I was fortunate enough to share several Lake Powell adventures with Don. Perhaps the most memorable one was when the two of us left work late one Friday afternoon and launched in the upper reaches of the San Juan arm about 11 p.m. beneath a full moon during a perfect balmy night. We fished slowly downlake for the next several hours and finally climbed into our bags about 4:30 a.m. About 30 minutes later at first light, we were awakened by thousands of stripers thrashing the waters just a few feet offshore. Within no more than a few minutes, we pushed off from shore and began two full days of fishing enormous, nearly unrelenting boils. Finally that Sunday afternoon about 6 p.m., in the face of the biggest striper boil either of us had ever seen, we reluctantly had to head back to town. We got back to Durango about 3 a.m. and we both were at work a few hours later after packing away a boatload of fillets. Don loved the outdoors, and beyond being an exceptional fisherman, he was also a master mechanic and a truly good friend. I still regularly use a boat I got from him a couple of decades ago. To this day, stories and memories about Don almost invariably come up on every trip.
