WOW, what a terrible loss - for Don's family, his company, our project and our whole community.
He was such a gracious and generous man; I heard all his employees really loved working for him.
His donation of those two large air intake louvers to our project was so kind, and in keeping with his personality and life philosophy.
His company has done construction on several of my projects, and it was always top quality . . . . I never hesitated to recommend him to clients.

I have never met a person so genuinely kind and helpful. He was a great friend to my dad back in the eighties and would always ask about him after Dad moved away. He always had a smile and kind word for everyone. I'll miss his usual greeting of "Hello young lady!", though I'm sure he greeted every lady that way. I feel Don brought a warmth and gentleness to this crazy world when it was sorely needed. We are all better people for having known him.

"Hello, Young Man!" -- always accompanied by that irrepressible grin. It was a privilege and and honor for me to meet Don (I always called him Donald -- I guess because I had enormous respect for him) very soon after he moved to Durango and started VSM. I was a scrawny hippy kid, pushing a shovel, and Donald never treated me with less than friendly respect. We worked on countless projects together over the decades, and it is rare to meet a man so professional and so driven toward whatever degree of perfection may be reached in hard work. Even during the course of challenging projects, when heads were being scratched and knuckles were being busted, faces would light-up in genuine smiles when Donald would walk in to solve issues. Even as he faced the hardest trials that life can bring. Somehow, hurdles would be overcome, projects would be complete, and off we'd go to face the next one. Odd, how the passing of good men like Donald seems to erode the very boundaries of my own universe. Odd, how this worlds turns. You'll be missed, Donald.
