Dick Wands Obituary

OLD TOWN - Dick Wands died July 17, 2015. Dick loved life, people, and especially his family. He left us too soon. We would have celebrated our 46th anniversary on July 19th. Being married to Dick meant that we had a partnership that supported and nurtured each other. Dick admired women - their strength, their intelligence, and their vitality. Because of Dick I knew there was nothing I couldn't try and nothing I couldn't accomplish. He passed these attitudes on to our daughter Meagan, always encouraging her to reach for the stars. Because of his support she chose the same kind of man for her husband - we are proud to call Matt Gregas our son-in-law. Meagan and Matt were with us on that last day, singing songs and telling stories. Dick died the way he lived, cheerfully and with a smile on his face.

Dick enjoyed people, a good story, a rambling joke, a political argument, a great motorcycle ride, and a good book. He loved and appreciated his friends, and there were so many. He loved his art, starting his career in advertising in NY; then on to Denver at KRMA-TV where he designed sets and became Art Director. He moved on to MPBN in Maine where he retired as Creative Director. Dick served in the Army and Vietnam, also as a graphic artist.

Dick loved all of his family. He reveled in their achievements and their everyday joy of life. Dick was anxiously anticipating the arrival of our first grandchild in October.

Dick leaves behind his wife Karyn, his daughter and son-in-law Meagan and Matt Gregas, his sister and brother-in-law Priscilla and Terry Bodenstab, his sister-in-law Kathy Wands, his special Uncle Perry Williams, and many brothers-in-law & their wives; he had 18 nieces and nephews and 18 great-nieces and nephews. He was the son of the late Alice (Fox) Wands Gerardi and was predeceased by his brothers Kent, Doug, and his nephew Ricky.

A memorial get-together will take place in upstate New York on August 8th at 1pm. Please contact [email protected] if you are interested in attending; directions will be available. If you'd like to remember Dick in a special way, please dedicate a book to him and donate it to your local library or make a donation in Dick's name to a Children's Art Program.

Dear Karyn and Family,

We remembered Dick at our recent Bub Club gathering (Bob Marggraf, Rich Tozier, Steve Faloon and yours truly), and were shocked and saddened that Dick was taken from our midst before he could join our merry band. Ordinary words fail at a time like this, but I remember how much Dick loved limericks:

To the end Dick was all smiles and cheer,
His humor will always be here,
Please let that make gladness,
To combat the sadness,
And hold all your memories so dear!

May God bless,

Dear Karyn & Family
I am so saddened to read of Dick's passing. He gave me a great amount of guidance in my first 'real" job at MPBN. I worked there as an intern and was then hired on staff for a year. He took me under his wing and shared his wealth of knowledge about art and T V production Those were the days before computer graphics and he taught me the "old school" methods that I often used throughout my career. Working as a sidekick to Dick was one of my most memorable work experiences. I cherish those times to this day. Dick had a great sense of humor .He would often share crazy stories about his past and time in Vietnam. We stayed in touch off and on over the years . I will always consider him a friend and mentor. Please know I am thinking of you .
