David Pomerantz Obituary

David Pomerantz, beloved husband, father, artist, and spiritual teacher, was born on July 22, 1941, in Portland, Oregon, and passed away on May 25, 2024, at his home in Durango, Colorado.

He was predeceased by his parents, Lillian Scharf and Morris Pomerantz, as well as his older brother, Sanford Pomerantz. David spent his formative years in Portland. He excelled in baseball during his youth.

After graduating high school, David served as a communications specialist in the U.S. Army. He then pursued a higher education, earning his BA from Portland State University. It was there that he met Elizabeth Haas, whom he married. David continued his academic journey at the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied philosophy.

David and Elizabeth had two children, Eva and Aaron, while living in the Bay Area. During this time, David made a name for himself as a successful potter, regularly selling out his kiln openings. Following his separation from Elizabeth in 1973, David relocated to Los Angeles. There, he continued to build his career as a successful potter and sculptor, constructing the largest non-industrial kiln in California and creating all the vases for the first U.S. tour of the King Tut exhibition.

David had experimented with meditation since childhood, and in the 1970s this practice became central to his life. In 1979, he met his spiritual teacher, Hilda Charlton, and moved to New York to be closer to her. During this period David transitioned to a full-time meditation teacher, devoting his life to helping many people on their spiritual paths. The world is better off for his spiritual guidance and dedication.

Elizabeth passed away in 1982, and David raised their children on his own. He was a wonderful father, raising Eva and Aaron with great humor and unconditional love. David loved engaging with his children throughout life, making jokes, and playing tricks.

David continued teaching meditation classes in New York City and in Princeton, NJ. He was intensely engaged with Hilda's work, participating in all her classes as well as helping build her SEVA Foundation school in South Kortright, NY. After Hilda passed in 1988, David was deeply involved with coordinating, editing and producing four books in the Golden Quest series by Hilda, with a team of volunteers.

In 1991, David found love again with Amalya Nattiv, whom he soon married. They moved to Durango, Colorado, where David formed a meditation group, GraceLight, holding twice weekly meditation classes and several retreat intensives each year on East and West Coasts, and in Colorado. This continued until a few days before his passing, with the addition of Zoom meditation meetings.

David was always an independent thinker who walked his own unique path in life. His unconventional approach and fearless pursuit of truth set him apart, allowing him to forge a distinctive legacy as a spiritual guide. With great love, he encouraged students to open more deeply to internal discovery in their meditations.

David is survived by his wife, Amalya Nattiv Pomerantz, his daughter, Eva Pomerantz, and his son, Aaron Pomerantz. His legacy as an artist, teacher, and family man will continue to inspire all who knew him.
