Darlene Wylie Obituary

Darlene Ann Wylie passed away Monday, September 4, 2023, in Akron, Colorado, surrounded by family. She was 75 years old. A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 23, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., at Allison Community Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Allison Tiffany Cemetery.

Darlene was born May 12, 1948, to Lawrence and Emma (Carlson) Shock in Durango, Colorado. She grew up in Allison, Colorado and graduated in 1966 from Ignacio High School. She married Steven Wylie on July 16, 1966. Steve was enlisted in the U.S. Navy and Darlene remained stateside until Steve's discharge. They raised their family in Durango and Darlene did various "work from home" jobs while caring for her family. Darlene began working for School District 9-R in Durango and retired from there 24 years later. Upon her retirement she worked for FNB/TBK Bank as well as bookkeeping.

Though Darlene always worked to support her family, her true passion and job was a "Studebaker Wife". She supported Steve and worked at and helped run numerous car shows every year for 48 years. Darlene also enjoyed trips to the Casino in Ignacio. By all accounts, Darlene won more than she lost!

She is survived by her husband, Steve; children: Rhonda (Tony) Beam, Justin (Angela) Wylie, and Scott (Zenda) Wylie; sisters: Jeannie Benson & Sherry Schutz; sister-in-law: Roydene Edstrom; grandchildren: Atlee, Deven, Tyler, Sara, Ethan, Calib, Gannon & Tanner; and numerous extended family, close friends and the students she mentored.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Lawrence and Emma Shock and sister-in-law: Sandra Leonard.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Florida Presbyterian Church or Allison Community Presbyterian Church.

I was lucky to work with Darlene at DHS in the counseling office. She was smart, organized, detail oriented, and easy to get along with. She was an impressive woman, always putting others needs before her own. She will be missed!

I loved Darlene and was sad when she left my biz Colorado Cake Critters to get a "real job" at school! ;-} She made darling Darlene clay pigs and I still have some! I always enjoyed running into her through the years and stopping for a chat. My best to her family, her loss is undoubtedly pronounced and painful for those who knew and loved her and were fortunate enough to have her merry, mischievous spirit sprinkled throughout their lives.

I had the privilege of working with Darlene at Durango High School for many years. She made life there infinitely better with her cheerful efficiency and professionalism. She lived her life well, and I honestly loved her. Condolences to her family. Darlene was one special woman.
