Dan Nicholl Obituary

Dan passed peacefully on December 8, 2020 at Mercy Hospice House in Durango, Colorado due to Aspergillus pneumonia, a complication of small cell lung cancer. He was an amazing, loving, generous, talented, and humble husband, father, and grandfather who was a friend to many. He was born to Archie and Maxine Nicholl July 28, 1938 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He had lived in Hermosa since 1998.

Dan attended Jordan High School in Sandy, Utah, and Huntington Park High School in California. After high school,

he attended East Los Angeles Junior College and then Art Center in Los Angeles on a scholarship due to his painting skill.

Dan served his country in the Coast Guard Reserves from 1959-1967. As he liked to say "we never lost a pier on my watch".

Dan married Linda Rundle (Nicholl) November 25, 1961 in South Gate, California. They had twin girls, Kerry Jo Nicholl and Kelly Jean (Nicholl) Erickson. The marriage dissolved in 1982.

Dan married Bonnie Brown (Nicholl) October 22, 1987 in Woodstock, Vermont. Bonnie brought with her to their marriage her daughter, Rhonda Brown. They remained happily married until he passed away.

Dan is survived by his former wife Linda, their daughters Kelly and Kerry, his current wife Bonnie, his daughter Rhonda and his granddaughter Alli.

Dan was an architectural illustrator, one of the few remaining hand illustrators in the world. Dan enjoyed painting

fine art from high school until the time of his death. He worked for top architectural firms illustrating projects around the world. His work can be viewed at dannicholl.com.

Throughout his career, Dan donated countless sketches, paintings, and renderings to local businesses, nonprofits,

friends, and neighbors. He mentored many aspiring artists and illustrators his entire life.

Dan loved painting, fishing, golfing, camping, and entertaining numerous friends and relatives. He enjoyed early

morning coffee at PJ's Market with friends and was a regular at happy hours at Dalton Ranch prior to Covid.

Dan donated several renderings for the initial fundraising efforts for Mercy Hospice House, where he spent his final hours. He would be pleased to have them announced as the charity of choice. Donations can be made to:

Two Celebrations of life will be held to honor Dan. The first on June 5, 2021 at the Nicholl home in Durango, Colorado. The second July 17, 2021 in San Juan Capistrano, California.

We somewhat lost contact with Dan and Bonnie since they moved to Colorado but we think of them frequently whenever we drive under the beautiful pedestrian bridge on PCH in Huntington Beach which Dan designed. They are great folks and we are honored to have had them in our lives. Dave and Sue Weigel

We loved seeing Dan and Bonnie at the annual Bocce Ball tournament and sometimes more frequently. Dan was always easy to talk with and we'll always remember him telling us that he painted an architectural rendering of the pedestrian bridge over PCH in Huntington Beach before it was built. We live nearby in HB and we think kind remembrances of him every time we drive underneath that bridge. May Bonnie and their family find comfort in knowing that Dan is now enjoying his eternal reward in paradise by our faith in Jesus Christ and God's amazing grace. May it be so. Amen

I am so saddened to hear the news of Dan. I still remember the day I walked into his office and was blown away by the incredible art he created. I gave him a computer background of a project, and before I drove into town his "concept sketches" looked good enough to be final in my mind. Best thoughts to Bonnie and Rhonda.
