Clarice Schmid Obituary

Longtime Hesperus resident Clarice Rhoda Schmid died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at her home. She had just turned 93.

Mrs. Schmid was born to Claude Monroe and Rhoda (Hawkins) Campbell on Dec. 12, 1918, in Delta. She was one of nine children. Her family moved to Wilson Mesa near Telluride in 1932.

On Dec. 14, 1935, she married Paul Martin Schmid in Montrose. They lived on the Schmid Ranch near Telluride until 1957, when they moved to Hesperus.

Mrs. Schmid cooked for Forty Lewis Mesa School for 17 years.

She was featured in the fundraising film "Remember Me" when she put a conservation easement on the Schmid Ranch. In recent years, Mrs. Schmid wrote stories about her life, many of which were published in Prairie Times.

She was a member of Marvel United Methodist Church and the Breen and Marvel granges.

Mrs. Schmid was preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years, Paul Schmid.

She is survived by her daughter, Goldie Jane Westgaard, of Hesperus; sons, Clifford Schmid of Ignacio, Marvin Schmid of Telluride and Sydney Schmid of Montrose; sisters LaVaughn Brotherton of Shingle Springs, Calif., and Phyllis Pope of Seneca, S.C.; brother Rollie Campbell of Ignacio; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
