Charles Mann Obituary

A LIFE WELL LIVED

Charles E. Mann, known by those who knew and loved him as Bob Mann, passed away on July 20, 2017, at the age of 88.

Born in Moffett, OK, Bob's family moved to Southgate, California when he was a toddler. He and his brother were raised in the heart of the depression by their father. Often finding there wasn't enough to eat, his father worked hard to provide the best life he could for his boys. He even used his GI benefit to travel America and educate his boys. The boys did what they could to help out around the house as their dad worked at whatever he could to provide, and God always did provide. Bob started working at the age of 8. He balanced school and work with his love for playing baseball and football. As time approached for his dad to return home from work, he'd run home to beat him so he could tidy up the house for his dad.

During his high school years he excelled in football and baseball, earning himself a scholarship to University of Southern California and an offer, which he accepted, from the Dodgers to play professional baseball. During those same years he was the Student Body President and he met the love of his life at a high school dance with a rival school. He would often recall how he was standing on the mezzanine level overlooking the dance floor when he saw her walk in. He said to a friend while pointing her out, "now that's the girl I could marry." His friend responded, "You couldn't even get a dance with her." Eager to prove him wrong, he swiftly ran down the flight of stairs only to be turned down. However, he had allies. A mutual friend quickly told her who he was and when he returned she agreed to the dance. He said after the dance he kissed her on the forehead, "an act that just wasn't done in those days" he'd say.

Bob went on to manage Safeway stores and becoming a trouble shooter for various failing stores. Bob always had a desire to coach, teach and shape young lives, so he entered college and received a degree in education. He went on to successfully teach and coach, taking his team to State on several occasions. Later, he and his wife moved to Durango, Colorado making it their home. They went into business, building up several successful businesses in hospitality with motels and restaurants.

Bob is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy Mann, his children Terry Mann and Cassie Mann, his grandchildren, Missy Mann, Scott Mann, and Kayla Mann, and his three great grandchildren, Trevor, William, and Forest. He will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Bob's life will be held at 10 am, Saturday, July 29, at the Resthaven Funeral Home, 8426 S Hwy 287, Fort Collins, CO 80525

My condolences to Bob's family. I first met them in 1981 when I started making deliveries for Mountain Wine to Durango and stayed at the Silver Spur Motel that they owned. Bob, Dottie, and their kids were the most gracious hosts. I was treated like family. They were what Durango used to be. He was an awesome man, full of stories and laughter.
