Rest easy, my long ago but not forgotten friend. I knew Chuck in his Midland years, playing on his Farmers Oil softball teams, golfing at local country clubs on his invitation, sharing an admiration for the genius of the Grateful Dead and Little Feat and enjoying a small Sarah running Chuck and Suzie ragged. A truly generous man, there were team parties at his house and many nights he'd pick up the check at the local bodega after a team throwdown of Tex-Mex, iced tea, and beer. Chuck was a fun man to be around. He had a sharp wit and our conversations on the course or over a beer were usually memorable.
I saw him only once after I moved to Austin. He gave me a jar of his BBQ meat seasoning that I think is still in the back of our spice rack. Then we lost touch.
Yesterday, on a whim while thinking about Midland, I googled Chuck and found this obituary. I was very moved, Sarah, by your tribute to your Dad. May God grant you and all the Kuehns the necessary peace when remembering Chuck. No doubt he's jamming with Jerry Garcia and Lowell George and planning the after gig party.

Your Dad and I were best friends at St Paul's School where we played football, basketball, and got into a bit of mischief here and there. We ran the tractors and painted the miles of fence at Greenbrier one summer and shared a dinner with JR now and again when we weren't driving to a "wet" county. We fished together in Cabo and I have stories that would make you laugh like all heck. Yeah that was me fishing with him when we caught giant yellow fin out of Sol Mar. I visited with your dad in Durango when he was stocking trout and calling elk. We golfed at Tamron and enjoyed reminiscing about boarding school days. God bless Chuck.

Dear Sarah:
This is Alexis Johnson. I played football with Chuck at St. Paul's School in 1975. He was a strong but wildly friendly guy. Indeed, well grounded, balanced and interesting. I have passed through Durango in the last thirty years on visits from Arizona and New Mexico where I live and haphazardly tried to call and look in on him. I recall he may have had a county road address at those times but I didn't get there. I would not have picked him to be gone by the time I got around to seeing him again. Hesitation by the decade is too slow. You wrote a loving tribute with friendly splashes in the midst of loss and sadness. He would be proud. It was loving message. Take care. Alexis H. Sarah, I am assuming you wrote this tribute to your father. Beautifully written, you have captured his essence. Thank you for sharing. I will pray for you and for all who were fortunate to share in his grace. I do not know you or your dad, but I am sure those whose lives he touched were blessed beyond measure and will continue to be blessed by him and his memory.

I will always remember seeing Chuck on a regular basis. Even on days he felt defeated he always had a smile. May he rest in peace and feel no pain any longer. Tara
